Preventive Health Screening Recommendations

First Week

  • Screenings
    • Length and weight, screenings to detect thyroid problems and rare blood disorders
  • Immunizations
    • Antibiotic drops or ointment in eyes to prevent infection
Birth - 10 years
  • Screenings
    • Height and weight, blood pressure, vision and hearing screenings
  • Immunizations
    • Diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP/DTaP) at 2, 4, 6, 15-18 months, 4-6 years
    • Polio: (IPV) at 2, 4 months; (OPV) at 12-18 months, 4-6 years
    • Measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) at 12-15 months, 4-6 years
    • Hepatitis B at birth-2 months, 1-4 months, 6-18 months
    • Haemophilus Influenzae b (Hib) at 2, 4, 6, 12-15 months
    • Varicella (chickenpox) at 12-18 months

11 - 24 years

  • Screenings
    • Height and weight, blood pressure, vision and hearing screenings (up to age 18), screening to detect problem drinking, counseling to prevent tobacco use
    • For women: Pap smear to detect cervical cancer (at least every 3 years) beginning at age 18 or earlier if sexually active; screening to detect chlamydia (a sexually transmitted disease) for sexually active women; screening for rubella (German measles) for females older than 12 years
  • Immunizations
    • Tetanus-diphtheria (Td) booster at 11-16 years
    • Hepatitis B (if not previously immunized) at current visit, plus 1 and 6 months later
    • Measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) (if no previous second dose of MMR) at 11-12 years
    • Varicella (chickenpox) at 11-12 years without proof of immunity or documentation of previous immunization
    • Rubella (German measles) for females older than 12 years without proof of immunity or documentation of previous immunization
25 - 64 years
  • Screenings
    • Height and weight, blood pressure, screening to detect colorectal cancer (all persons ages 50 and over), screening to detect problem drinking, counseling to prevent tobacco use
    • For women: cholesterol screening at ages 45-65; Pap smear to detect cervical cancer (at least every 3 years); mammogram and yearly clinical breast exam: at 40-49 years, discuss with physician; ages 50-69 years (every 1-2 years); screening for rubella (German measles) for women of childbearing age
    • For men: cholesterol screening at age 35-65
  • Immunizations
    • Tetanus-diphtheria (Td) boosters
    • Rubella (German measles) for women of childbearing age without proof of immunity or documentation of previous immunization

65 and Over

  • Screenings
    • Height and weight, blood pressure, screening to detect colorectal cancer, vision and hearing screenings, screening to detect problem drinking
    • For women: Pap smear to detect cervical cancer (at least every 3 years); screening for breast cancer up to age 69 (every 1-2 years) with mammogram only or mammogram and yearly clinical breast exam; ages 70 and older, discuss with physician
  • Immunizations
    • Tetanus-diphtheria (Td) boosters
    • Pneumococcal/pneumonia vaccine
    • Influenza/flu vaccine, yearly each fall season
