The Gift of Exercise

  • The average American gained seven pounds over the winter holidays.
  • More than 75% of Americans are overweight today.
  • Obesity (more than 30% overweight) dramatically increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
  • A man who is 10% overweight decreases his life expectancy by 11%.
  • More women believe they are overweight but more men actually are: 71% of men are too heavy compared with 58% of women.
  • Exercise is probably the most positive thing you can do to lose and control your weight.
  • Exercise will not only help reduce your waistline, it will make you feel better as well!
  • Aerobic exercise is excellent for the heart and lungs. Brisk walking or bicycling are excellent as are cross-country skiing, rowing and swimming because they use major muscle groups in both the upper and lower body.
  • Strength training (working with weights) builds up lean body mass and gives you greater overall endurance.
  • Simple stretching can prevent injuries, make you feel better, and support your continuation of a regular exercise routine!
